The Lumiere Brothers not only invented the "Kinematograph" but they also invented the "Autochrome", a wonderful system to record colour images on a glass plate.
They had an exquisite eye for photographic aesthetics. These Proustian photographs were taken by them between 1906 and 1910.

ReplyDeleteI especially like the lady at the top of the stairs in the lowermost image. She seems to have knitted her own hair into the shape of a hat. :¬)
I'll go and google Autochrome now, to try and find some more...
There were beautiful autochromes in the Science Museum, in London...And in the photo-cinema museum in Bradford they had an exhibition of the Lumiere Bros work....They are beautiful to look at. They are glass transparencies to be seen against the light. George Bernard Shaw was a British enthusiast of this medium.
