Fougasse

Cyril Kenneth Bird (Fougasse) London, England 1887-1965

"Fougasse", (from the first world war Jargon, 'a small land mine which might or might not hit the mark'), was one of the most elegant and charming cartoonist I came across.
These delightful vignettes are from a motoring book published in 1935.
Soon I'll post more of his work because this man's art is a great example and inspiration.

Zdenek Miler

I know nothing about Zdenek Miler apart that he was born in Czechoslovakia the 21 February of 1921 and that he is very prolific.
For many years I have admired these two stills from his animated film "The millonaire who stole the sun", from 1948. I have never seen the film but these drawings are excellent.

Carl Larsson

Born 1853 in Stockholm, Sweden, died 1919, Falun, Sweden. Curiously cheerful work from a man who suffered profound and dark depressions.

Calé

Alejandro Del Prado (Calé) was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1925 and died in Buenos Aires in 1963.
Calé drew "Buenos Aires in a vest" for the popular weekly "Rico Tipo". Although Cale was born in the province of Santa Fé, he was an wonderful observer of the life of the Porteños, the inhabitants of Buenos Aires.
Calé was a poet of the simple people and their lifes. His wonderful work still inspires me after all these years.
These stills are taken from the short "Buenos Aires in camiseta" made by Martin Schorr.
This film was released in 1966. It was done with drawings specially drawn by Calé for this project. Unfortunately, Cale died of a heart attack before the film was completed.

The quality of these stills is not great because they are taken from a poor VHS copy but the film is very difficult to find.

Jean Ignace Isidore Gerard (J.J.Grandville) Born Nancy, France, 15 September 1803. Died Vanves, France, 17 March 1847.

Low and West

These pictures complete the collection of "Rake's Progress" by David Low and Rebecca West. Note Alfred Hitchcock in the film set (And Charles Laughton) Mosley can be seen in the church congregation and Low's boss, Lord Beaverbrook is in several pictures. Looking with attention at these illustrations I am marvelled by their elegant grace and the fabulous body language of the characters.They remind me of the world of Jean Renoir's "La Règle du Jeu", which was produced six years after the publication of this book.

West and Low

This is a true rarity and a beauty. A modernised version of "The Rake's Progress" by Rebecca West with drawings by David Low. It was published by Hutchinson in 1934. A wonderful depiction of London's society in the thirties with caricatures of eminent personalities of the period. See how many you can recognise. Tomorrow I'll post the rest of the pictures.

Florencio Molina Campos

Florencio de los Ángeles Molina Campos was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, the 21 August 1891 and died 16 November 1959.

He was an extraordinary painter of gaucho life with a sardonic wit and a great love for his subject. In 1942 worked for Disney as a consultant and can be seen at work in his studio in "Saludos Amigos". He is mostly recognised for his calendar illustrations for "Alpargatas", which today are collector's items. These paintings are from the thirties and forties.
