Costa exercised enormous influence on me, as a person and as an artist. We met when we were quite young and shared studios and life for a number of years. I always marvelled at Costitas wonderful sensitivity and delicate pen work.

"El Flaco" is a very retiring person and sadly has given up drawing all together.

Mathieu Laville (1961-1989, France)

Mathieu sent me from Italy a letter in this beautifully hand drawn envelope a little time before his tragic early demise.
This is what LAMBIEK says about Mathieu:

"Mathieu Laville studied fine arts in Lyon and Arts Déco in Strasbourg in the early eighties. He made illustrations in Vanity, Vogue and the Italian Marie-Claire. His work was influenced by Ever Meulen, Joost Swarte and R. Crumb. He also made several collages and pop-ups. Unfortunately, Laville died unexpectedly in a car accident at age 28, before he had his chance to truly become one of the "kings of illustration".

In April 1998, some professional artists got together in Buenos Aires and after a tremendous libation we started to SIGN like EACH OTHER and OTHER ARTISTS. This photo images are from a video record of that lovely occasion.

En Abril del 98 una barra de dibujantes nos juntamos en una festichola en lo del Negro Caloi. Luego de copiosas libaciones y despues de que Crist repitio todos sus cuentos, nos pusimos a firmar como OTROS DIBUJANTES. De la partida de los dibujeros, y perdon si omito a alguien, eramos: Quino, Caloi, Tute, Rep, Amengual, Crist, Tabare, Etc...Estas imagenes son de un tambaleante video filmado en la ocasion. Me la acuerdo como deliciosamente divertida!

Jorge Rutman

Oscar Grillo at seventeen by Jorge Rutman.

Jorge Daniel Rutman was the Rimbaud of my generation. I met him when he was barely fourteen years old and already a genius. He had a hypersensitive pen and was capable of evoking extraordinary emotion with a minimun of lines. We studied art together with Carlos Garaycochea and spent an inordinate number of hours drawing and listening to music together. Rutman was a very accomplished musician and aged eighteen or nineteen he gave up drawing, destroyed everything he had drawn and became a professional musician, he still is one, playing the piano and bandoneon in some of the most important tango orchestras in Argentina and abroad. These are some of the few drawings left by Rutman on earth.


Jorge Daniel Rutman fue el Rimbaud de mi generacion. Lo conoci cuando apenas tenia catorce años y ya era un genio. Era poseedor de un plumín hipersensible y era capaz de evocar extraordinaria emoción con un mínimo de líneas. Estudiamos juntos con el profesor Carlos Garaycochea y también pasamos muchísimas horas dibujando juntos y escuchando musica. Rutman era un músico entusiasta y a los 18 o 19 años rompió todos sus dibujos y se dedicó profesionalmente a la música (aún lo hace) y terminó tocando el piano y el bandoneón en algunas de las mejores orquestas de tango de la Argentina. Estos son algunos de los pocos dibujos que quedan de Rutman en el planeta.
